Benefits

Why Choose Family Mediation

Family mediation offers a better way to resolve disputes about children and finances. Here is why thousands of families choose mediation over court.

Faster Resolution

Most families reach agreement within 4-8 weeks, compared to 6-12 months or longer through court proceedings.

Cost Effective

Significantly cheaper than going to court. Legal Aid and the £500 Government voucher scheme may cover your costs.

Confidential Process

Everything discussed in mediation is private and confidential, unlike court proceedings which can become public record.

Child-Focused

Keep your children at the heart of decisions. Create arrangements that prioritise their wellbeing and maintain family relationships.

You Stay in Control

Make your own decisions together rather than having a judge decide for you. Flexible agreements that work for your family.

Less Conflict

Mediation reduces hostility and improves communication, making co-parenting easier and protecting children from parental conflict.

Your First Step

MIAM Appointments

Book your Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting online

A MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) is a private, confidential meeting with a qualified family mediator. In most cases, you need a MIAM certificate before you can apply to court.

You attend a MIAM separately. The other person is not told that you have booked a MIAM. If they are contacted, this will only happen after your meeting has taken place.

The purpose of the meeting is to give you clear information and help you understand your options.

Attending a MIAM does not commit you to mediation. It is simply an opportunity to explore your options and decide what approach feels right for you and your family.

During a MIAM, the mediator will:

Explain how mediation works

Listen to your situation and the issues you want to resolve (such as child arrangements or finances)

Consider whether mediation is safe and appropriate in your circumstances

Answer any questions you may have about the process or alternative options

Quick Assessment

Is Mediation Right for You?

Answer a few simple questions to find out how we can help you resolve your family dispute.

Question 1 of 5

What type of issue are you facing?

Select the option that best describes your situation

This assessment provides general guidance only and is not legal advice. A MIAM with a qualified mediator is the best way to fully understand your options.

What Is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is a process where an impartial, trained professional helps separating couples or family members resolve disputes without going to court. The mediator does not take sides or make decisions for you. Instead, they help you communicate effectively, explore options, and reach agreements that work for everyone involved.

As experienced online family mediators in the UK, we help families across England and Wales resolve issues relating to:

Child Arrangements

Where children will live, how much time they spend with each parent, holiday arrangements, and decisions about education and healthcare.

Financial Matters

Division of property, savings, pensions, and debts. Maintenance arrangements and financial support for children.

Parenting Plans

Detailed agreements covering day-to-day care, communication between parents, and how to handle changes as children grow.

Family mediation is voluntary. Both parties must agree to take part, and either person can withdraw at any time. Any agreements reached are not legally binding unless you choose to make them so through a consent order.

Do I Need Mediation Before Going to Court?

In most cases, yes. Before you can apply to a family court in England and Wales for orders relating to children or finances, you are legally required to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This requirement applies to most family disputes and is designed to encourage families to resolve matters without court intervention.

When is a MIAM required?

  • Before applying for a Child Arrangements Order
  • Before applying for financial orders on divorce
  • Before seeking orders about property or maintenance
  • Before disputes about specific issues like schooling or medical treatment

There are some exemptions to the MIAM requirement, including cases involving domestic abuse, child protection concerns, or situations requiring urgent court action. A mediator can help you understand whether an exemption applies to your situation.

Even if you qualify for an exemption, mediation can still help you resolve disputes more quickly, affordably, and with less stress than court proceedings. Many families find that mediation helps them reach better outcomes because they remain in control of the decisions rather than having a judge decide for them.

What Is a MIAM Appointment?

A MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) is a confidential meeting with a qualified family mediator. It is usually the first step in the mediation process and is required before most family court applications in the UK.

The purpose of a MIAM is to give you information about mediation and help you understand your options. You attend separately from the other person involved in your dispute. The other party is not contacted until after your MIAM has taken place, and they will not be told that you have booked unless you want them to be.

What happens during a MIAM?

During your MIAM appointment, the mediator will:

  • 1Listen to your situation and understand the issues you want to resolve
  • 2Explain how mediation works and what to expect from the process
  • 3Assess whether mediation is safe and appropriate for your circumstances
  • 4Discuss funding options including Legal Aid and the Government voucher scheme
  • 5Answer any questions you have about mediation or alternative options

Attending a MIAM does not commit you to mediation. If you decide not to proceed, or if the mediator assesses that mediation is not suitable for your situation, you will receive a signed MIAM certificate that allows you to make a court application.
